I have a similar problem. Just installed 10.04LTS (amd64) on my new computer (Gateway DX4831-03C) with the latest updates, using fglrx driver.

Suspend and hibernate both fail at invocation: stuck at a blank screen (not power saving mode) and the computer is no longer responsive.
