I'm running an HP Elitebook 8530w with Nvidia Quadro FX card and have a similar issue. There's another bug that's been filed that also seems similar. Basically my system freezes and the only way to recover is to hold down the power button. THIS SUCKS! It's been a problem for me since upgrading from 10.04 to 10.10 which has been a few months nearly and I use my computer for working. I've seen no response from the Ubuntu engineering team on the other bug filed.

There is nothing in the logs on my system that points to what the problem might be. My guess is that this is due to the fact that the system is completely frozen.

# Symptoms #
- Happens randomly and there have been times where I power off due to the freeze, boot up Ubuntu and login and the system freezes almost as soon as I start using it again, then I have to power off again.
- Sometimes seems to be related to changing power states (i.e. plugged in or running on battery) but I don't know for sure
- CPU is running at 100% and fans are spinning at max RPM with high temp air being exhausted

Again, THIS SUCKS AND MUST BE ADDRESSED AND FIXED. It's totally unacceptable to have such a serious malfunction unresolved for so long. Lots of Ubuntu users work with their systems as business tools and must have a reliable platform on which to do their jobs.
