Can confirm that PulseAudio with ALSA works fine.

This workaround straightened out my audio, when using straight ALSA (no PulseAudio):
- install the gstreamer bakcend for Phonon (phonon-backend-gstreamer)
- change Phonon backend to use gstreamer in System Settings
