Thanks, munbi! Compache turned out to be my problem as well. Rather than deleting /usr/share/initramfs-tool/conf.d/compcache, I edited it and set COMPCACHE_SIZE="0%" which had the effect of disabling compcache (after updating my initramfs).

It looks to me like the only affect of disabling compcache would be a decrease in performance on workloads that swap a lot.
