I have exactly the same problem on the below machine:-

AMD 64 Quad Phenom 2.2Ghz
4GB Dual Channel RAM
nVidia GeFore 9800 GT 512MB RAM

Ubuntu 10.04 running Kernel 2.6.32-22-generic
