Vouching for Tony in his assessment (brightness in GRUB), I would like to add, if it helps, that using setpci doesn't work in X, either. (e.g. "setpci -s 00:02.0 F4.B=B2", etc.) There are two brightness settings listed, default level '5', the value of one can be changed (IIRC), but neither changes the actual screen brightness.

Also, while the Fn keys do pull up the brightness app now (default kernel for Lucid does not; for this notebook, it's Fn + Up/Down), using up also produces "±", as it's gives keycode 126.

I am using kernel 2.6.34-020634rc6-generic, and checked with a couple of other kernels in this range.
