Version 3 of the Linux kernel allows me to change screen brightness.
Somewhat unrelated point: Unity 3D wouldn't start properly in Ubuntu 11.0 or 11.04. I had to reset compiz after session start to force the menu and window decorations to appear. Gnome 3 worked flawlessly. Have switched to XFCE.
