Confirming this also for an Acer Aspire TimelineX 3820TG
Linux ubuntu 2.6.32-23-generic #37-Ubuntu SMP Fri Jun 11 08:03:28 UTC 2010 x86_64 GNU/Linux
(Kubuntu)
System Bios v 1.13
Buttons on keyboard will bring up the On-screen slider and act 'vobbly' without effect.
Software sliders has no effect (but will update values in /sys/class/backlight/ )
The setpci command referenced earlier did not have any visible effect.
The "acpi_backligt=vendor" grub command had no visible effect
The only working solution for me now is to modify grub with "acpi-osi="
This will enable (give effect to) buttons on keyboard, but software will still not modify backlight.
And brightness is not adjusted when pulling out the AC power.
I have not seen any other effects of the "acpi-osi=".
