I can also confirm this bug on a Gateway NV7915u, running Ubuntu 10.04, kernel 2.6.32.23-generic.
Saghaulor's workaround of manually modifying /proc/acpi/video/GFX0/DD02/brightness works for me as well.
Is there some logging that can be enabled in order to see what happens behind the scenes when the Fn + command buttons for brightness are pressed? So we can see if it is in fact just a permission issue, or perhaps something more?
