I can confirm that ubuntu probably has a problem with intel graphics, and that in particular the brightness setting is one of the symptoms.

When I ran karmic, the graphics worked fine, including brightness adjustment (with applet and with function keys).

Yesterday (Saturday June 12) I upgraded (using the upgrade option in the synaptic package manager) to Lucid, and now the brightness adjust does not work anymore: it's either 100% or minimal.

(I also see that their is a short glitch in in the screen every few minutes; that might be related, or it might be a separate issue, don't know.)

I have an ASUS laptop, model UL30A, 2x1.3GHz (intel U7300), 4Gbyte RAM.

I am strongly considering to reinstall from scratch (as opposed to upgrade from an existing karmic install, which I did yesterday), not just because of the graphics issues (also to upgrade from ext3 to ext4); I will probably do that tomorrow or so, until that time I can do diagnostic checks. Unfortunately I do not have a lot of time and resources to do very time consuming things, I need my laptop for my daily work.
