Ok, I think this is the first time I recovered from this kind of freeze, partly thanks to this comment:

So, the mouse (in this case the 'MX Revolution Cordless Mouse') froze, and first thing I did was go to first console via Alt-F1, logged in there, and issued:
$ sudo modprobe -r usbhid
$ sudo modprobe usbhid
This recovered the clicking, once I was back at the desktop, for a short while - but then it started failing again...
After that, I unplugged the USB dongle, and plugged it back in - and now it seems the mouse responds to clicks in a more stable fashion... (I'm rebooting now anyways - but at least its nice being able to save your work :) )
