sennight, you're probably thinking of the HAL removal. HAL is the device subsystem that, IIRC, handles device recognization, hotplugging, mounting, etc. It was partially removed in Karmic and completely removed in Lucid.

I think you're on to something- it could just be that udev (the replacement for HAL) doesn't support the D600's suspend/resume system.
