I've tested it with the mainline kernel:
aje@aje-laptop:~$ uname -a
Linux aje-laptop 2.6.34-999-generic #201004211003 SMP Wed Apr 21 10:07:37 UTC 2010 i686 GNU/Linux
The problem has disappeared and I can use 2 screens again. So one could suspect it's an Ubuntu problem?
