Thank you Jeremy, I'm not sure if this is related, but apart from the time
it takes to wake up, it also takes a very long time (10-15 seconds) to show
the desktop and the panels after I log in. The only things I have changed
are:

I replaced the second of my 2 19" (1440x900 resolution) monitors with a 23"
(1920x1080 resolution) monitor and
I've done a dist-upgrade to 10.04 beta, in order to keep my original
settings.

I don't know how to report this properly, but maybe it is related to the
below problem and helpful in it's solution.
If there's any related information you need, i'd be glad to help if you tell
me what additional information you need and how i obtain it from my system.
