Something similar was triggered yesterday on my Lenovo Thinkpad R60, having an ATI X1400 graphics system - this started when using the game "battle tanks". The GPU temperature rose quickly to above 70 degrees. The problem did not stop even after quitting the game, but the GPU temperature was reduced to 62-63 degrees C.

Symptoms:
The display became "over-exposed" at the edges, approximately 2-3 cm, flickering and some overall "noise/bright spots". The whole computer was slowing down/locking completely at times. Temperature reading for the CPU was at 59 degrees C.

The fan speed was at medium all the time at around 2700 rpm.
