Have not tried altering the grub, but disabling the ethernet and then shutting down works.

except.....
the nvidia settings are not remembered, so I have to reset System > Preferences > Appearance > Visual Effects every time on startup, otherwise Thunderbird locks itself to the top left of the screen, and I get that stupid black cross for a cursor.
