Just tested with an older kernel. 2.6.31 (Karmic version) has this error, but booting up on a 2.6.28 from Jaunty makes suspend work fine again ;-)
However, this makes the sound completely non-functional, so it even if it is a workaround for this present bug, it renders the snd intel 8xx driver non-operational (aplay -l shows no devices)... so it isn't really a useable workaround for most, I guess.
