Update: the freeze has nothing to do with the message. It's due to C1E being enabled in the BIOS on an AMD Athlon II X2 based system. Disabling this stopped the freeze issue. Gory details here: https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=15289
Still getting the message but audio playback is fine now.
