The issue is still present in 2.6.31-17-generic, and the DEB package of the patched kernel disappeared from http://people.canonical.com/~apw/lp451337-karmic/
Putting "acpi.power_nocheck=1 acpi_osi=linux" to the kernel boot parameters sometimes works to me, but not always.
