I have an Acer Aspire 5720z which kept switching of because the CPU was overheating as a result of the fan not working. I installed the linux-headers-2.6.31-14-generic_2.6.31-14.48lp451337apw1_i386.deb package and then the linux-image-2.6.31-14-generic_2.6.31-14.48lp451337apw1_i386.deb package from http://people.canonical.com/~apw/lp451337-karmic/. Rebooted and Tada! It works. Thanks for the fix.

Kuppster, I have the same uname -a output as you, so if you install the same packages in the same order, it should work for you too.
