Thanks Ivan,
I applied the linux-headers-2.6.31-14-generic_2.6.31-14.48lp451337apw1_i386.deb package, then applied the linux-image-2.6.31-14-generic_2.6.31-14.48lp451337apw1_i386.deb package located http://people.canonical.com/~apw/lp451337-karmic/. The fan now seems to be functioning properly.
