I have the same problem in Karmic Koala Beta, with wired connection. I have wireless card but not a near AP (sorry). My cards:

Network controller: RaLink RT2561/RT61 rev B 802.11g
Ethernet controller: nVidia Corporation nForce2 Ethernet Controller (rev a1)
