I'd love to try the backports, but for now they are broken for LPIA:

As for being usable for "wife and daughter" - only if you're not using 802.11n. With a 802.11n connection, I see network hangs that last over 1 minute. If your wife or daughter can live with connections that work for one minute, followed by another minute off (closing any skype calls, etc.), then you're a lucky man - mine would skin me alive if I gave them a laptop (not) working like that... ;)
