I have the same problem with my Acer Aspire 5542 Ubuntu 10.10. The same problem with the open source driver as fglrx. I tried dynpm and various other profiles in /sys/class/drm/card0/device/power_method & /sys/class/drm/card0/device/power_profile.

The worst part is that I keep losing data after restarting!
