Same problem here:

~$ uname -a
Linux Mihai 2.6.28-12-server #43-Ubuntu SMP Fri May 1 20:28:32 UTC 2009 i686 GNU/Linux

Luckily..if I boot the computer with a cd in the drive..then everything works...

Otherwise no luck in reading anything.
