Is there still a need for me to check a new ubuntu-alternate ?

I use only the regular i386 distribution.
I did not pay much attention to the 'lpia' thing.
At least for i386, I bypassed the problem by manually insmod-ing missing /bugs.launchpad .net/ubuntu/ +source/ cdrom-detect/ +bug/195614/ comments/ 8
driver.
