In brief, the problem (for me, using the ath5k driver, on an Acer Aspire One) is that whilst the standard Jaunty kernel properly detects UK hardware and enables the non-US channels, the linux-backports-modules variant of the wireless modules go into the US regulatory domain by default, and connection to my channel 13 AP fails. (Use of modparam ieee80211_regdom=GB or "iw reg set GB" allows connection.)
