I've done two things on this computer.
sudo gedit /etc/fstab
... I edited this file, then decided against it, and deleted my change, then saved it (in effect, therefore, re-saving an unchanged file)

...and reported this bug on Launchpad.

Either one, or the other, appears to have fixed the problem, and the new kernel now works quite happily. This is possibly therefore not the most helpful bug report in the world, but thought it was worth adding this comment.
