I tried the command in the previous comment

dbus-send --system --print-reply --dest="org.freedesktop.Hal" /org/freedesktop/Hal/devices/computer org.freedesktop.Hal.Device.SystemPowerManagement.Suspend int32:0

The result was the same as running from the Gnome menu: failure to resume (as described in the bug description).

So I have changed the package to hal, on the advice of the previous comment's poster.
