$ update-grub --version
grub-mkconfig (GRUB) 1.98+20100804-5ubuntu3
$ update-grub2 --version
grub-mkconfig (GRUB) 1.98+20100804-5ubuntu3

Both not work: properly listed items on terminal during updating, not shown in boot menu after restart.
But when auto-update installs new kernel image, result is correct (new kernel appear in boot menu).

I not found any menu.lst on my machine:
$ find / -name "*menu.lst*"
/usr/share/doc/memtest86+/examples/grub-menu.lst
$
