Troy's method worked for me, so I wrote a small plugin for Rhythmbox which simply changes the values in gconf-editor to "nothing" when Rhythmbox is playing. If you want to use it, just extract the archive to your ~/.gnome2/rhythmbox/plugins/ folder and activate the plugin in Rhythmbox.
