I've just installed 9.10. This option existed in 9.04... It's very inconvenient since I also use a notebook with external monitor.
Now I'm using a workaround solution - "System">"Preference ">"Display"> uncheck "Mirror Display" > Turn off the notebook monitor and leave external monitor turned on. However, the lid still has to be kept unclosed.

I'm using desktop in Chinese. Here is the above desktop terms in Chinese language:
系统 》偏好设定 》显示 》不选 “镜射荧幕“ 》关闭 “手提电脑显示器”
