That gui error message came back. It was:

"Installation Problem
The configuration defaults for Gnome Power Manager have not been correctly installed.
Please contact your computer administrator."

I noticed in the graphical login that there are choices for different "Sessions" (Failsafe GNOME, GNOME, KDE, xterm)

I've tried them all, and they all come back to this error, or the 256 error.
Even the failsafe GNOME didn't work, but instead the login hung, with a black screen and a movable white mouse.

I also tried to chmod the /tmp to 755 or 777, but neither made any change, so I left it as it was (777).
