Yes, I've got that directory:
ft@deadware:~$ ls -ld /etc/gconf/
drwx------ 2 root root 4096 2008-09-10 22:20 /etc/gconf/
The problem is that everything used to work well, but after some updates, it stopped to work at all, both with KDE4 and Gnome... (I'm using Intrepid Ibex since when they opened the repositories...). After that I tried to make it work using gnome-keyboard-
However it is VERY annoying. Maybe I should file another bug? I was waiting for some new updates, but now it is some days that it doesn't work (maybe since the 9th of September, watching Synaptic logs... before the landing of libgnomekbd3)
