I encountered this problem when trying to install feisty on a HP Pavilion 540n desktop, after basically pulling my hair out, swearing and throwing things for a while I found a fix:

Add "all_generic_ide" (without the quotes) to the end of the boot string. (F6 at the install menu)

Problem solved.
