Japotto's suggestion for obtaining the drivers from install usb worked perfectly work me on my HP Mini 1000:
dan@dan-laptop:/etc/apt$ diff sources.list sources.list.old
1c1
< deb file:/media/[Ubuntu-Netbook-Remix 9.10 _Karmic Koala_ - Release i386 (20091028.4)]/ karmic main restricted
---
> deb cdrom:[Ubuntu-Netbook-Remix 9.10 _Karmic Koala_ - Release i386 (20091028.4)]/ karmic main restricted
1) Add the CD-ROM to the list of sources from the 'Software Sources' app
2) If you leave the /etc/apt/sources.list file as-is the you wont be able to obtain the drivers via 'Hardware Drivers' app (the update process will hang once you select the STA drivers)
3) Make the edit above with vi or gedit
4) Reboot
5) Use 'Hardware Drivers' and the install of the STA drivers for the BCM4312 will proceed properly!
