It's a bit clunky, but if it is driving you nuts, you can add the user information to the local /etc/passwd file, and the user will be able to use sudo and su.
The catch is that the user_id and the user_name must be the same in both ldap and the local /etc/passwd. It sort of defeats the purpose of ldap, but if you only have one admin user, it works fine.
