Bug Description

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-input-synaptics

In lucid, my touchpad functioned normally, including circular scrolling when I enabled that.

In maverick, it seems that the bottom edge scroll zone is mispositioned off the edge of the physical touchpad - circular scrolling works along three edges, but not along the bottom edge.

I have the same issue with my newly installed ubuntu 10.10 64-bit. That was never there with 10.04 32-bit.
on my x100e Thinkpad Lenovo, the lower (bottom) edge doesn't seem to move the pointer besides horizontal scrolling is impossible.

Hi Max Bowsher,
Thanks for reporting bug and helping us to make ubuntu even better. For developers to work on this bug we want to have additional information from you, about the bug.

In your terminal type xev>xev.log
and attach it in a separate comment.

ah!!, So many logs.
ok, but the logs xev and evtest are not very readable. There is too much noise. Upload the said logs again using this technique.

When the xev window pops, point your mouse pointer in that window and press a keyboard key (say a). Now without doing anything else, try to scroll horizontally a few times. Having unable to do so, press 'a' again and then exit using Ctrl-x. Now upload the xev.log to launchpad.

Do the same for evtest also and remember to keep the logs short by not moving around your cursor as it creates a lot of events..

Thank you for your fast reply but there are no events generated when I horizontally scroll rubbing the lower portion of my touchpad. It seems that it does not trigger an instance.
Besides I can't enable horizontal scroll using gpointing-device-settings.

You are welcome juliobahar,
I want the log with no events after you press 'a'. But remember to try to
produce events using lower part of the touchpad. Do same for evtest also.

This is my evtest output. what I did was:
1. clicked the LEFT touchpad button then
2. performed left to right strokes at the bottom part of the pad in an upward fashion to about its half
3. clicked the RIGHT touchpad button then
4. stroked in the same manner but from right to left
5. clicked a button - LEFT touchpad
6. Did a sine wave movement on the bottom part from left to right
7. clicked a button - RIGHT touchpad

May I know way specifically are you searching for. I might help more knowing what that would be!

Thanks

I am having this same problem on lenovo thinkpad edge. Ubuntu 10.10 Bottom 1/4 of touchpad not responding. I did synclient -m 10 and confirmed that there is no response on this area of the touchpad. (synclient would not detect presses in this area) I found other posts about this laptop having issues. The BottomEdge parameter defaults to 4500, which corresponds roughly to where the pad goes dead. When I change this parameter to 5000 synclient still will not register touches in this area. Let me know if I can feed you more data to help you track down this issue.

Your issue with your touchpad is quite different from this one, I would recommend you to search a more relevant bug report or file a new bug report if you do not find anything appropriate.

Is your lower part of the touchpad completely dead(not even motion of cursor) or just scrolling problem. You can actually run evtest and see that your lower part of touchpad is actually producing events or not by omitting the '>evtest' in the evtest command.

I will be unable to provide any additional info regarding this bug I reported, as the hardware I was experiencing it on has had an unfortunate encounter with some grapefruit juice, and is now quite dead.

Then I think we should close the bug report here as the bug report has an issue that is quite different being discussed here.

So I request Alan or julio to file a new bug report in this regard and subscribe me there, so that we can resume the discussion there. After that I will close this bug report..

This issue stands. I can confirm with 100% certainty, that it is a software problem and not a grapefruit juice mishap as Max mentioned.

Yes, the lower part is completely dead no motion of the cursor at all. Both xev and evtest produce no events. This happens to me on ubuntu 10.10 64-bit only, after a clean install. To make sure it isn't a faulty hardware, I've used a the 32-bit Lucid 10.04 LiveCD, and the touchpad is fully functional.

The whole story is exactly as what Alan is describing in post #17. There is some malpositioning or misplacement of touchpad's axises. X-axis is fine, while the Y-axis is limited at around 4550.

Actually the problem of the original bug reporter Max was quite different of yours and Alan's. So in that regard I was requesting you to file another bug report that mentions yours and Alan's issue so I can close this bug report.

Still, no problem I will do that for you..
