Bug Description

When booting on a LiveCD and selecting any choice (or not pressing on any key), the PC hangs on the blinking cursor "_".

Affected computer : DELL OPTIPLEX 740

WORKAROUND: Add "mem=1G" to the boot options. The LiveCD should then boot normally. Please note that this option is not necessary when Ubuntu is installed.

WORKAROUND: The best solution so far is to go into the BIOS (press F2 when the PC first turns on) and under PERFORMANCE menu disable C STATES CONTROL.

AlsaVersion: Advanced Linux Sound Architecture Driver Version 1.0.21.

I burned 5 different cd's of kubuntu, ubuntu and kubuntu-alternate. I tried that cd on my thinkpad laptop and it works fine but on the optiplex 740, i get the blinking cursor after the initial selection screen.

I have the same problem. Live CD fails to go ahead of the initial screen. All of the options fail.
After choosing an option, the cd makes a noise for 2 seconds and stops with no activity.

Tried "safe graphics mode", "noacpi" and "nolacpi". None worked.

If I do not select a language in 30 seconds, it freezes at that point itself.
I have Toshiba satellite l305d amd64. I tried the 64-bit version of Ubuntu karmic koala.

When I boot the Karmic Koala 9.10 on Dell Optiplex 960 the Ubuntu menu loads however, if I choose Install or Run Live, I get a blank blank screen with a blinking cursor.

Oddly... if I hold down the enter key it will proceed through the boot and load Ubuntu 9.10 very weird.

The best solution so far is to go into the BIOS (press F2 when the PC first turns on) and under PERFORMANCE menu disable C STATES CONTROL.

Apply your settings. Exit. Boot the Ubuntu CD again and enjoy

The BIOS option above is not listed on the Optiplex 740 BIOS. Holding down the ENTER does not work either for the 740. Is there going to be a fix for this or will we have to wait for the next release of Ubuntu?

I am experiencing the same problem on Optiplex 960 w/ BIOS A05 (not sure if there's a more specific version). This configuration has the NVidia 9300 GE 256MB graphics card. The fix mentioned in the blog post did not work for me, as that option was already unchecked in the BIOS.

I should add that even after installing using the text-based installer for 9.10, I get this black screen of death when the installed OS boots. (So this is not limited to the LiveCD.) When X11/Xorg starts it also seems to kill my ability to interact with the keyboard (so cannot switch out to console).

I also tried Ubuntu 8.10 LiveCD with no better luck. The only OS / configuration I have so far gotten to work is Fedora 12. The installer worked fine (in graphical mode); after installation, though, I had to install the NVIDIA drivers manually (the kmod-nvidia packages did not work at all).

The same behavior with Ubuntu 10.04 amd64 and all cd iso flavour (desktop, alternate, server).
First observation, I can successfully boot Ubuntu 10.04 i386 version on Dell Optiplex 740 with BIOS 1.2.2. Second observation, while bootloader run you can press F6 to edit boot options, next if you completely clear all boot options you will be able to successfully boot Linux kernel. Clearing kernel options instantly lead to kernel panic - no rootfs available, which is expected. If you provide any valid kernel boot options (eg. initrd= ...) then you get blank screen and boot freeze without any boot messages.

Hurrah muchos kudos to the sys admin who suggested it. Works great for me.

I noticed when the icons at the bottom off the screen come up (keyboard? and
stick man in circle) you do need to press a key to get the ubuntu
install/live choices to come up so that you can add the extra option onto
the cmd line.

If you don't do this is it just hangs and requires a hard boot.

Many thanks again.

Simon.

Now a happy bunny.

This workaround works like a charm. I've successfully installed Ubuntu 10.04 on Dell Optiplex 740. After install you don't need to workaround this bug (mem=1G), and all memory is available.
