Bug Description

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-input-synaptics

After upgrading to 9.10 Karmic Koala (from 9.04 Jaunty Jackalope) the touchpad stopped working on my HP EliteBook 8530w. My laptop has a touchpad, a pointing stick, and a set of three mouse buttons for each of them. The only thing currently working is the pointing stick. Everything worked perfectly fine with Jaunty.

I solved the problem.
After I had edited the grub menu.lst manually in the past, the new installed kernel was not loaded to the boot options (See Bug https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/initramfs-tools/+bug/392039 ).
I just removed the backuped menu.lst and did a grub-update to generate a new one.
After reboot karmic had the latest kernel. Also my grafic card problems solved this....

To everyone else confirming this bug on their laptops:
make sure that you are running the kernel of Ubuntu 9.10, not the one from 9.04.
Please run "uname -a" in the terminal.
If you see "Linux ..... 2.6.31-14-generic" then the bug might be real,
but if you see "Linux ... 2.6.28-..." then you should reboot to the
2.6.31 kernel and check if the bug still appears.

I checked, and sure enough, I am booting into the old kernel from 9.05. But grub doesn't list the new kernel. I went in and changed menu.lst and nothing I do seems to have any effect on what is display at boot time. I can edit the kernel name to boot, and boot into 2.6.31-14-generic, but a few seconds after I have logged in (with the gui) the system locks up, hard...only solution is a power cycle. I am not sure what's going on - I am going to running the memory test for a while and make sure I don't have bad ram.

OK, to continue my saga...this seems to have been caused by the (broken) transition made from grub to grub2 with the coming of 9.10. I followed the directions at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Grub2 and was able to fix things...and (so far) no crashes. But knock on wood.

I also experienced this problem and also solved it by booting 2.6.31, but I have a few notes which might help other people solve this problem:

I updated my laptop this morning to 9.10. The update manager complaint about it being unable to install some packages, I didnt really read this, but apparantly this also included the 2.6.31, so I was still running the old kernel.

After reading this thread I installed 2.6.31. This did not work as I need the propertiary nvidia driver in X, this was not automatically installed so X failed to start. After this I installed the kernel headers. Somehow the nvidia driver automatically patched my kernel after this.

This solved my problem, i'm now able to boot X and use my touchpad once again. Hope this might help other solve their problem as i'm probably not the only one using the Nvidia driver.

I have a very similar problem.

I was running karmic on 2.6.31 almost fine (evdev was as usual completely not working so I used kbd)
yesterday it was working and now the xserver doesn't start with:
(EE) config/hal: NewInputDeviceRequest failed (8)

it's xorg-server 2:1.6.4-2ubuntu4

I tried xorg-edgers ppa, still not working, I tried evdev back and forth, no luck either

I have Nvidia as well. I believe is somehow related to it, as when I installed the Nvidia drivers, I started having touchpad problems.

Using 2.6.32.22-generic, as uname -a says

Ok, correction to my latest post:

Problem is NOT due to the nvidia driver. I uninstalled it completely, and installed it manually from the nvida webpage.

No difference whatsoever.

I believe it just started when I upgraded to 10.04.

- dmesg does not show my touchpad now anymore, and it would do in 9.10
- xinput list does not list the device either
- sudo tpconfig tells me though:
Found Synaptics Touchpad.
Firmware: 8.96 (multiple-byte mode).
- cat /proc/bus/input/devices tells me:

Pion, this bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? If so, could you please test for this with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current/ .

If it remains an issue, could you please run the following command in the development release from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal), as it will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report:

apport-collect -p xserver-xorg-input-synaptics REPLACE-WITH-BUG-NUMBER

Please note, given that the information from the prior release is already available, doing this on a release prior to the development one would not be helpful.

Thank you for your understanding.
