PC slot unsupported, and many "cardbus cards are not supported" messages running Karmic on Averatec 3280

Bug Description

While booting Karmic (Alpha 6 plus updates to present time) many (30 to 50) messages "cardbus cards are not supported" are displayed. They show up in /var/log/kern.log, two messages a second.

Also, no cards work in the PC card slot, while they do work under 9.04 and 8.04.3LTS. (See comments #19 and #20 below).

This MAY be related to the Openchrome driver or other X software - see comment #26 below.

Also, behavior is different when running XFCE - see comment #27.

This does not happen running Lucid 10.04 - see comment #30.

I assume this is a kernel problem, but I don't know how to specify that beyond what's in the uname -a command above.

At times, the messages regarding cardbus cards will show up on console ttyN screens, but this only happens intermittently (as of 27 October 09).

Also, while the internal pcmcia wireless interface works, various cards that I have do not work in the cardbus slot.

The internal wireless controller is:

00:09.0 Network controller: RaLink RT2500 802.11g Cardbus/mini-PCI (rev 01)

I've attached the /var/log/dmesg file from my current boot of this computer.

As of today, the 'cardbus cards' message no longer appears, but now text consoles are even more unusable - instead of the constant messages, the screen appears as an array of random colors. (see bug report #447595). It is possible to switch in and out of a console with ctrl-alt-Fn and alt-F7, but you can't see what you are doing. I was able to log in blindly to a console, switch back to Gnome, and see the login on the console with `who` in a terminal window.

I'll attach the current dmesg file

Since comment #6, and some updates, what happens now is that the multicolored bitmap screen appears while logging out or shutting down out of Gnome/X.

This is something that used to happen on this system several versions of Ubuntu ago.

Also, on trying to shut down one time, the Shut Down and Restart options were grayed out.

All else being unchanged, now I get the multi-color screen reported in the earlier bug, when I try to switch to a text tty, instead of the many cardbus messages. HOWEVER the cardbus messages ARE showing up in kern.log:

On tty consoles, one sees frequent 'cardbus cards are not supported' messages.

Basically the system is not really useable, this is extremely serious.

There's no such problem running Debian lenny on this system (it's a dual boot setup).

In addition, cards such as a Netgear WG511T wireless card aren't even recognized by lspci, while this card in particular works under 9.04 (running from a live CD), and worked previously under 9.04 when it was installed on this laptop.

However the internal cardbus wifi card does work.

This is a real show-stopper for 9.10 on this laptop.

However, I am able to use a Netgear WG511T wifi card in the PC slot under both 9.04 and 8.04.3 LTS Ubuntu.

If this is not fixed by release date, I will revert to installing one of those two versions of Ubuntu, and await alphas and betas of 10.04 before attempting to install later versions. This is a very serious problem.

Note that the internal Ralink RT2500 Cardbus/mini-PCI wifi card works, while the slot for external cards does not. External cards, such as a Netgear WG511T, DO WORK under 9.04 on this system.

There may be a relationship to the Openchrome display driver or other component of the X system:

If I open up the gnome-terminal and run `tail -f /var/log/kern.log` I see the 2 messages per second as described in comment #25 above. Also the size of kern.log is constantly increasing.

However, if I switch to a text console (eg tty1) and execute the same command, kern.log does not change - that is, the messages stop.

It's not clear that the display driver or other X software are causing the pcmcia socket from working, or are just causing the messages.

I believe the powernow-k8 messages only happened after I plugged a card into the cardbus slot - at least they weren't there immediately after booting.

There may be some relationship here to some old bugs regarding powernow-k8 -

I just reinstalled Karmic on this system, updating with apt-get. The cardbus slot still does not work, and the warning messages are still being appending to kern.log every second.

I'm attaching the list of packages updated as of 2009-12-28 ..

I reinstalled Karmic on this system today, and updated it as of about 15:00 PST. The kern.log messages no longer appear, and the cardbus slot now works (I was able to use a Netgear WG511T card in it).

I'm enclosing an archive containing the output of apt-show-versions.

Hi Peter,

This bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? Can you try with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO CD images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/ .

If it remains an issue, could you run the following command from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal). It will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report.

apport-collect -p linux 436341

Also, if you could test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. Please let us know your results.

Thanks in advance.

This is no longer an issue, as of comment #35.
This laptop is a dual-boot into both Karmic and Lucid, and I've been keeping Karmic updated every few days and Lucid updated at least daily.
I just re-checked the cardbus slot - a Netgear WG511T is functioning perfectly in that slot.
The messages to kern.log which I reported earlier, which appeared every few seconds, are no longer appearing.

I'll look at the upstream kernel if there still appears to be an issue.

I am currently running this kernel for Karmic:

2.6.31-20-generic #58-Ubuntu SMP Fri Mar 12 05:23:09 UTC 2010 i686 GNU/Linux

I'm not sure that running one of the upstream kernels would be a good idea.
