Bug Description

If I plug in an USB device after boot, it's simply not recognized, this happens with both external storage drives and peripherals. I have found similar bugs but they were either nor relevant or not Karmic problems.

This bug appeared after my upgrade from jaunty.

This appeared for me (on Jaunty) between 2.6.31rc7 and release.

Not expecting you to fix Jaunty, just suggesting here it may be kernel interaction.

I can confirm this, I have upgraded my MSI Wind U100 from Jaunty, and after a few upgrades none of my USB devices are recognised, i think this can be related to the not recognised camera of the Wind. After i have turned off (?) the camera before boot, my usb works again. There may be some relation with https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/276495
i have Karmic, with latest updates.

Happens for me too. Fresh install of karmic alpha 6 on brand-new hardware, so no jaunty kernel was ever installed.

Most annnoying since one needs to reboot to use a USB stick...

Some add-on info : The USB peripherial (usually a key) is sometimes recognized, and sometimes not. In the latter case, it doesn't show up in lsusb.

After it is plugged in, mounted, unmounted and plugged out, it never gets recognized again when plugged back in.

I have the same problem on my MSI Wind U100. My Ubuntu is up-to-date but it's impossible for me to mount my usb key... It's really annoying.

Do you need more informations ?

and i thought I was alone!.. You have described my problems exactly USB devices and webcam issues. I was on the verge of wiping the hard drive and starting from scratch... sometimes the devices work (especially if I downgrade to an earlier kernel e.g. .11 - but next reboot they have stopped working again. i don't understand what is going on.

MSI Wind U100, new Karmic RC setup with updates, and no USB detecting. It worked with jaunty.

The same for me. MSI Wind U100 with Karmic final release installed clean off ISO image. No USB peripherals detected (mouse, USB stick, USB CD drive and USB printer tried). All worked in Jaunty.

My usb 2.0 is on a separate pci card. Worked for drives Ok for a while in Karmic(thought unable to empty trash)..Jaunty OK. Karmic wont recognise canon PSa1000 (OK in jaunty). Unplugged camera, plugged in usb Key (U3: sucks), now flashing (or rather fading) on and off but not accessible. Dmesg and lsusb both see it....weird..... will do more tests.

Sorry, seems I have a busted usb port....weird, though, since devices showed up in dmesg and lsusb (just not with nautilus), until 2nd testing finally reported problems.

I think this is the same as

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/435352

Blacklisting the uvcvideo driver in /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf makes USB usable again (but does not fix webcam).

I'm seeing issues with USB Drives on my MSI GX 630 (with a webcam that works fine).
If I reboot with the thumb drive in place, I can read/write fine, but removing the device and pugging back in, the device is undetectable.

did a fresh installation on my Acer Extensa 4630Z Laptop and it would not detect/mount usb storage devices (eg. USB drive, External hard-drive etc) but the other usb devices work fine! The devices show-up in the disk utility but give "No Media Detected" message. Restarting udev would solve the problem temporarily though.

Also on an MSI Wind 100 (branded as Advent in the UK, but the same machine in every respect), with the final release of Karmic, regularly updated. USB works sporadically, rebooting and updating grub sometimes seems to work, sometimes doesn't.

The original report is indeed the same as bug #435352 (fix released) as commented by Jordi Sellares (#19).

Most of the comments here seem to be related to another problem that does affects me too. I have just reported a new bug (bug #564459) that hopefully would describe the bug more precisely.

Marking this bug as invalid, superseded by bug #564459. Please feel free to revert if you think I'm wrong.
