Bug Description

I think this is a privacy/ security issue.

I can't seem to find a way to disable the logging and display of most recently used files in unity. Privacy values in the open source community would seem to dictate that the user should be able to disable this feature.

That's a reasonable concern, it's something for the zeitgeist team to consider (if not already)

affects: unity → zeitgeist

Hey art alexion,
I'm not sure if I completely understand the purpose of this bugreport, is it about not logging actions on files, or are you fine with logging them, but they should just not show up in unity.

I would be able to turn their display off or on in unity.

Changing target back to 'unity-place-files' because this bug is about a missing toggle in the UI

Could I just remove that package, or will that disable all file access through the launcher?

This data is a reflection fo what Zeitgeist knows, if there's a UI to
manipulate it, it would be there. We could certainly have a "forget
recent file" option but I think that would be a little nuclear :-)

There is such an option in the regular Gnome interface. I use it frequently. Would be nice in unity as well.

Thanks to all for the attention to this report.

I'll change the bug status meanwhile, so that we can still track it. I think kamstrup will see if zeitgeist or unity is the best place for that :)

If there's a general "don't record recent docs" pref, Zeitgeist may well
want to watch that.

There is a Blacklist option where you can either turn off logging completely
until you tell it to log again.
Also you can just blacklist specific item types or apps or folders from
being logged. Its all there. I am thinking of creating a logging manager UI,
I am not sure this should be in Unity. However a "incognito mode" button in
Unity is a good idea IMHO.

I'm marking this one as Invalid because it's unlikely to be something we'll address strictly within the Unity project - someone correct me if I'm wrong. That said - this *is* a serious issue, and the Zeitgeist team is aware of it and actively working on fixing it.

There are some baby steps going on at lp:history-manager, but it's still some way before that will be the solution. Read: It's nowhere near working at this point in time.

gnome-activity-journal -> preferences -> blacklist manager -> blacklist -> e.g. file:///media/* or /media/*
after restart it seems to prevent new items in the blacklisted path to be added.
