Bug Description

* How about adding the option to Ubuntu One to save various
configuration settings/profiles (for example on my current machine) and
to offer import them during the installation of the new machine? So I'd
get completely configured machine right out of the box.

Such configurations may include .rc files, firefox profiles and
bookmarks, themes, etc. It may also have a plug-in infrastructure so
other applications configurations could be added later on.

That's exactly the kind of thing that migration-assistant does.
However, this is hardly the place for feature requests. Please use
http://brainstorm.ubuntu.com for that. -- Evan

Evan, I agree about feature request, but wouldn't it have legitimate reason to appear here as well? -- Alex

No, because feature requests should either be filed as wishlist bugs or
brought up on Brainstorm. Specifications are for defining work you plan
to do yourself, or for defining work that someone else, whom you have
coordinated with, will do. Besides, it's out of scope for this
specification which deals with integrating an option to install Ubuntu
One post-install in the installer.

I suggest filing a bug against Ubuntu One
(https://bugs.edge.launchpad.net/ubuntuone/+filebug) and then the bug
can be marked as wishlist and the migration-asssistant source package
can be added to the bug from there, if deemed necessary by the Ubuntu
One developers. -- Evan

How hard would it be to implement? If you set it, for example, just take some specific configurations, such as .rc profile, just for starters? And maybe it would be implementable in time for karmic. -- Alex

I could see this being pretty slick if it was easy to extend for applications by throwing a hook at install time (much like the apport hooks) in some standard location that allows you to add data for that application to the backup. All you'd need is a tiny API and then to iterate over all the hooks to backup.
