Bug Description

Binary package hint: cups-driver-gutenprint

Hello,
I'm running Intrepid Alpha 5 amd64 edition. Printing from Firefox, Evince and Open-Office all yield completely black pages. I'm running cups-driver-gutenprint version 5.2.0~beta4-0ubuntu1 if that helps. This printer was detected automatically upon installation. The printer worked flawlessly under Hardy. I've attached the contents of /var/log/cups/error_log.

Thanks in anticipation,
Andrew

This has nothing to do with Gutenprint. For your printer the SpliX driver is used.

Can you do the following test:

dpkg -P splix
wget http://openprinting.org/download/printdriver/debian/dists/lsb3.2/main/binary-amd64/splix_2.0.0-0.rc2.0lsb3.2_amd64.deb
sudo apt-get install lsb
sudo dpkg -i splix_2.0.0-0.rc2.0lsb3.2_amd64.deb

Now remove your print queue and create a new one. Can you print now?

Thanks for your reply,
I've just trialled the above suggestion. The results are altered but not greatly improved. The test page prints normally but without the Ubuntu logo on the top of the page. Printing a PDF from Evince again results in margin to margin black pages apart from words that are in a white font. I'm hesitant to test it with open-office just for fear of running out of toner.

Running latest Ubuntu 8.10.

I have the same problem with
Samsung ML-1520, ML-2010 and ML-2510
Test page prints OK, but without Ubuntu logo
Evince prints garbage and mostly black page.
OpenOffice prints black page.

Tried http://openprinting.org/download/printdriver/debian/dists/lsb3.2/main/binary-i386/splix_2.0.0-0.rc2.0lsb3.2_i386.deb
with the same results.

Also tried splix from hardy and
http://openprinting.org/download/printdriver/debian/dists/lsb3.2/main/binary-i386/splix_1.1.1-2lsb3.2_i386.deb
with the same results.

I have the same problem (completely black page) on Intrepid amd64 with a Samsung ML-2251N printer. It works beautifully in Hardy.

Can you replace the file

/usr/lib/cups/filter/pdftoraster

by the attached file and try again?

Does this solve your problem?

Can you try both A4 and Letter page size? One will most probably give you a misaligned printout but it is only to check whether possible crashes (bug #267903, bug #268510, bug #261363) disappear.

Tested in OpenOffice, evince, test page:
Letter prints OK (don't know about misalignment, because only have A4 paper)
A4 prints 4mm of garbage on the left side, but the page is printed correctly.

No crashes of any kind.

possibly related to this: I have a samsung ml-1640, but there is only the driver dor ml-1630 which is selected by default. it prints black pages.
I went to the samsung site and downloaded their cups drivers, then the printer works well. I don't know if they can be included for copyright issues, but it would be great if so!
thanks

This is a bug in the pdftoraster filter. I got the fix from upstream already and I am currently applying it to the CUPS package.

Hi all

I am also a user of Samsung ML-1640. Similar to what Nicolo Chieffo mentioned, my printer is not detected correctly. However, i do not know how to install using the unified driver. Can anyone guide me? As suggested by Nicolo, adding the driver to repository would be great!

Warren Tan, can you please install all updates which came out for Intrepid and then try again? Please choose the ML-1630 with the SpliX driver. It should work now.

In Jaunty the ML-1640 is explicitly listed.

Hi

Hey, thanks! My Samsung ML-1640 works now.
I now hold in my hand a nice looking (black and white though) Ubuntu printer test page.

Actually, my printer is not directly linked to my computer. It is linked to another computer on my home router network. Nevertheless it works just great!

Thanks
Warren Tan
