Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. This bug did not have a package associated with it, which is important for ensuring that it gets looked at by the proper developers. You can learn more about finding the right package at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage . I have classified this bug as a bug in oxine.

I've recreated this on a Hardy system that was upgraded from Gutsy and did not have libmagick9 installed.

I'm subscribing motu-sru to require a go-ahead for fixing this in the stable release:

1. oxine is currently broken in hardy since it requires a gutsy library (libimagick9)
2. a minimal patch is attached. In principle a simple rebuild is enough but an additional fix is necessary to solve a ftbfs caused by the xine version check. Note that this is not applicable to the development release (upstream changed to using pkg-config instead of xine-config).
3. TEST CASE: on an hardy system with NO libimagick9 installed, use your preferred package manager to install oxine. The installation will fail since oxine requires libimagick9 to be present. Now use the package from hardy-proposed; this will install and run fine since it requires libimagick10 which is by default in any hardy installation.
4. There is no regression potential of the patch, since it only allows the package to be built with the correct version of libimagick.

To have this available in hardy-updates, we need your help in testing it.

If you would like to help, please add the following line to /etc/apt/sources.list:

  deb http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ hardy-proposed universe

Then update and install (or upgrade) oxine with your preferred package manager.
Please report test results here.

The TEST CASE is very simple: on an hardy system with NO libimagick9 installed, use your preferred package manager to install oxine. The installation will fail since oxine requires libimagick9 to be present. Now use the package from hardy-proposed; this will install and run fine since it requires libimagick10 which is by default in any hardy installation.

Many thanks in advance for your help!

Using version 0.6.4-4ubuntu0.1 from hardy-proposed:
Package installs correctly.

As another point how come the version of libmagick-dev is still 9 in the repositories if the library itself is on 10?

@James: that was a deliberate choice made by Debian. For the new transition to imagemagick 6.4 (which is on-going right now in Debian) we will change the b/d from libmagick9-dev to libmagickcore-dev.
