Bug Description

Binary package hint: synaptic

In the new version of synaptic in intrepid the new "Quick Search" feature allows users to find packages more quickly and efficiently, however its only a "recommended" package of synaptic which means users dont have access to the feature without having to manually install the package. Most users wont know this and wont be able to use it.

What should happen:

Open synaptic, use "Quick Search" to find package, carry out task.

Ubuntu version: Ubuntu intrepid (development branch)

Synaptic version:
  Installed: 0.62.1ubuntu4
  Candidate: 0.62.1ubuntu4
  Version table:
 *** 0.62.1ubuntu4 0
        500 http://archive.ubuntu.com intrepid/main Packages

Recommends are installed by default now. What were you using that caused it not to be installed?

(Therefore, certainly anyone installing Intrepid from scratch will get it. I'm not sure about upgrades from Hardy as yet; Michael could advise.)

Its definitely not installed with with an upgrade to hardy, as for a clean install I'm not sure.

Michael mentioned a bit about it on the mailing lists but never gave a reason why not.

It appears to no longer be a recommends but instead a suggest.

From the changelog:

    - make deborphan and apt-xapian-index suggests instead of recommends
to save space on the CD - this means we loose the quick search
      feature in the default install

Affecting xubuntu-meta. We'll seed apt-xapian-index ourselves as we don't have CD size issues and our users enjoy the quick search functionality.

After installing apt-xapian-index on Intrepid system, and restarting of Synaptic, I get rebuilding index. After a few minutes it pops back to Quick Search and I have the expected functionality.

If this is to be an option, it would make more sense to me to have the dialog box invisible, rather than simply grayed out. I'd rather expect it to be installed by default if at all possible with Ubuntu.

Yeah, I'm in favor too of installing this feature by default. Or at least hide the functionality if it's not installed.

apt-xapian-index + deps are just 2 megabytes...
We can remove some themes or some screensaver.

Or at least, provide a way for the newcomer to install it.

I have spoken with the Developer working on this. The first objective is to come up with the space needed to fit the dependencies onto the install media. If that turns out not to be possible, his backup approach will be to put a button in the GUI to easily install the dependency onto the system. Thanks for everyone's interest in this.
