Bug Description

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-intel

With UXA, when I load up Xorg I may or may not see corrupted images on my screen. However, no matter what, half a second later, the screen goes black and I can't Alt+Ctrl+F<n> to a command prompt.

I'm using an Intel 945GME Express [8086:27ae] (rev 03).

For Karmic we're making UXA bugs like these a top priority, so I would like to forward this one upstream. First though, we need to verify the issue still exists with the latest upstream release. Would you please install and test the 2.7.0 driver and reproduce the bug, and let us know ASAP? A PPA with a Jaunty version of this driver is available at: https://edge.launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat/+archive/x-updates/

With the new driver, all graphics are MUCH faster, but the same thing happens with UXA as it did with the old drivers.

Okay thanks.

I'm curious though, the original description of the issue indicated the system failed very quickly. How are you able to determine that with the newer driver that "graphics are MUCH faster"?

Haha, I didn't explain myself explicitly enough.

Without UXA, graphics are great. This happened with Intrepid and this new graphics driver from the PPA.

With UXA, the system crashes as soon as GDM is supposed to come up. This happened only in Jaunty (as the problem -- extremely slow graphics -- started with Jaunty and trying UXA was a supposed fix) with both drivers.

Hi min,

I've forwarded your bug upstream to https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=21573 - please subscribe to that report in case upstream has further questions or wishes you to test something. Thanks ahead of time.

Also, if they need you to test an even newer version of the driver, you can check for git snapshots at https://edge.launchpad.net/~xorg-edgers/+archive/ppa

Current Operating System: Linux mindvirus-laptop 2.6.27-8-eeepc-lean

Kernel 2.6.27 does not have GEM. Therefore UXA cannot work.
If you want to test UXA, you will need to use at least a 2.6.28 kernel.

UXA never worked on non-GEM kernels until after 2.7.0. Please try 2.7.99.1, which includes a series of fixes that got it working for me.

You're using a non-GEM enabled kernel. You need to use the Jaunty 2.6.28 kernel or newer in order to use UXA, because other kernels don't have GEM, which UXA requires.

As Eric says, this should be resolved with more recent versions of the driver. Please feel free to re-open the bug report if you upgrade and still have problems.
