Bug Description

intrepid 8.10 alpha 6
dell inspiron 2600, intel 830m graphics

Internal LCD display is completely corrupt and unusable with default xorg.conf. Can use an external monitor.

Had the same problem under Hardy and had to specify "i810" driver in xorg.conf though this doesn't seem to work now.

The reason you cannot specify "i810" driver in xorg.conf is that this driver has been removed in intrepid (see first comment in # 279835).

[This is an automatic notification.]

A new major version of the -intel driver is now available in Karmic.

This version includes a major reworking of the acceleration
architecture, which resolves a huge number of issues. We do not know
whether it resolves the issue you reported.

Would you mind testing Karmic Alpha-2 and seeing if it is still a
problem? CD ISO images are available here:

  http://cdimages.ubuntu.com/releases/karmic/

If the issue can still be reproduced on karmic, please report here with
your findings, and attach a fresh Xorg.0.log from your test, and we will
be able to forward the bug upstream.

Otherwise, if the bug no longer exists in Karmic, let us know that as
well.

In the off chance you encounter different bugs while attempting to test
Karmic, please report those as new bug reports.

apfrod, please post the xorg.conf you're using, if you've modified it from stock.

Nothing is modified, I am booting from the CD for these tests. Any old configs are long gone, sorry!

Perhaps should mention I'm using the older version A08 bios from Dell which used to fix compatibility with the old i810 driver, in case this is relevant.

I suspected that was so, thanks for confirming.
Btw, I would like it if you could subscribe directly to the upstream bug at https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=22595 so you can answer their questions directly; if I'm in the role of a go-between you and upstream it could delay how long it takes to get your issue sorted out.

I've added myself as CC... not sure if that's subscribing. But I'll happily deal with questions directly. Thanks for your efforts!

Will you please attach the output of vbios.bin?
Thanks.

Is he vbios.bin file the one that you get by following the procedure at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Backtracing#Obtaining%20the%20video%20BIOS ? (in that case the file will be named /tmp/rom.bin)

I followed the procedure in the wiki:

# cd /sys/devices/pci0000\:00/0000\:00\:02.0/
# echo 1 > rom
# cat rom > /tmp/vbios.bin
# echo 0 > rom

apfrod, upstream has closed the bug due to no reply from you.

Please re-test against current Karmic to see if the bug still occurs. There have been a number of improvements lately to 8xx cards so the issue may now be resolved. If not, on the upstream bug report please attach the output of `lsmod`, a fresh Xorg.0.log, and the output from `dmesg` after reproducing the problem. Then mark the upstream bug report 'Reopened' so they can investigate. Here's the upstream bug link for your convenience: https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=22595

If the issue cannot be reproduced, just give your comment here and we'll close out the Ubuntu bug report.

We're closing this bug since it is has been some time with no response from apfrod. However, if the issue still exists please feel free to reopen with the requested information. Also, if you could, please test against the latest development version of Ubuntu, since this confirms the bug is one we may be able to pass upstream for help.
