Bug Description

Model: Dell Latitude D531
Distro/Installer: ubuntu-7.10-alternate-i386

Issue #1: Video is not working out of the box (VGA=ATI Technologies Inc Radeon X1200 Series)

1) After running the installer, rebooted and could not get to GDM login.

2) In shell (ctrl-alt-F1):
$ sudo apt-get install xorg-driver-fglrx

3) change driver in xorg.conf from "vesa" to "fglrx"
$ sudo nano /etc/X11/xorg.conf

4) Reboot, splash screen shows up, gdm is able to start

I would like to report a bug since X can't auto-configure without this restricted driver (xorg-driver-fglrx), and that there is no automatic compatible driver for the card to fallback on (such as vesa). User-assisted xorg configuration (dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg) does not work because it never saves the xorg.conf file, once you select the fglrx driver from the list and press enter, the screen goes blank (not allowing you to configure resolutions and save the configuration file). The only reasonable way I have found to configure this has been reported above. Usability-wise it is not recommended that new users have to change xorg.conf manually.

This is practically fixed in Hardy. The ati-driver supports your card, and you do not need to manually set up anything in order to use fglrx.. just let the driver manager to load fglrx.

Changed in xserver-xorg-driver-vesa:
status: New → Invalid
Changed in xorg:
status: New → Fix Released

When "practically fixed" becomes "fixed" please inform me and this will be tested again. Also please note that this problem is with Gutsy and not Hardy, will a fix be pushed via Updates for the Gutsy release?

No, gutsy will not receive further updates.

And I already closed this bug, so if you have issues with Hardy, feel free to reopen.
